da roleta: Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey looks to have fallen out of favour under Rafa Benitez having missed out on the squads to face Huddersfield Town and Burnley at St James’ Park completely despite being fit again after injury, and there is one surprise reason why his Magpies career may effectively be over.
On the chalkboard
There is no doubt that the 27-year-old has had his fair share of ups-and-downs during his spell with the Tyneside outfit, but he looks set to face a big battle to rescue his future right now.
The former Liverpool man has been available for selection for the previous two fixtures against the Terriers and the Clarets, but has failed to make the 18-man squad on either occasion with Sean Longstaff and Isaac Hayden establishing themselves as they key partnership in the centre.
With Mo Diame and Ki Sung-Yueng also battling for a place there is no doubt that Benitez has plenty of quality and strength in depth in that particular area right now.
Why is Shelvey struggling?
The midfielder wasn’t exactly at his best when he did feature earlier on in the campaign, and the emergence of Longstaff isn’t the reason why his Newcastle career is suddenly in doubt.

The six-cap England international is known for his ability to fire long-range passes forward, but it just isn’t needed in a system where you have a target man and two people who don’t have a great deal of pace in Ayoze Perez and Matt Ritchie out wide.
In truth, Shelvey is probably missing the presence, speed and movement of Dwight Gayle up top, and he may well have been better suited if Newcastle had replaced the West Bromwich Albion loanee with a similar player to the 28-year-old, instead of Salomon Rondon.
That said, Migeul Almiron could be a saving grace if the duo are given time together, but isn’t on the cards as things stand.
