da luck: Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Graham Roberts has told The Transfer Tavern that the club need to sign at least six players this summer if they are to compete next season.
da brwin: Spurs sacked Jose Mourinho on Monday after falling to seventh in the Premier League table.
Ryan Mason has been placed in interim charge and he oversaw a win on Wednesday, as Spurs beat Southampton 2-1 in north London.
That victory has moved them within two points of the top four. The two teams above them in the table are Chelsea and West Ham United, who play each other this weekend while Spurs face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final.
Still, the club are 13 points behind second-placed Manchester United and 24 points behind leaders Manchester City.
And Roberts believes that the club need to invest heavily this summer as they look to rebuild and challenge again next season.
Speaking exclusively to TT, he said: “I just think we need, whoever comes in, we need at least six, seven players to get the squad back up to anywhere near challenging for big trophies.”
Roberts has also identified the areas in which Spurs need to improve as the window nears.
He added: “I think maybe Hugo, we need another goalkeeper, to put pressure on him. I don’t think Joe Hart’s doing that at the moment.
“Right-back, definitely, two centre-halves, definitely, if the left-back (Sergio Reguilon) stays he could do a good job. I think we need a really creative midfield player because Harry Winks and Hojbjerg can play the two holding, you’ve got Sissoko who’s got another year so he can do that.
“We’re not that far away but yes, we do need five or six players.”
