da brwin: Sir Trevor Brooking has stated that England must be positive over their chances of glory in Euro 2012, and feels that Roy Hodgson’s men can beat anyone in the tournament in a one-off match.
The Three Lions beat Ukraine 1-0 on Tuesday night to top Group D, and as such will now face Group C runners-up Italy in the quarter-finals.
Despite England not being entirely convincing so far, the FA chief is confident that the side will do well.
“You might have thought at the start, ‘are we going to be strong enough? Can we score the goals? Wayne (Rooney) is going to miss the games’ and things like that,” he told Sky Sports.
“But now we’re in a one-off every time and I think we’re capable of beating anybody on our day. I’m sure every country left in will say the same thing.
“We’ve got to appreciate we have come quite a way in three weeks but we don’t want to waste it now.
“It’s such an unpredictable tournament. Previously everyone was saying we’d end up with Spain because we’d be second in the group.
“Then France lose, Russia got off to that great start, everybody talking about Holland, who go home without a point. You cannot anticipate, you’ve just got to focus,” he concluded.
