da cassino: Louis van Gaal may not have been the right manager for Manchester United in his spell with the club between 2014 and 2016, but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be listened to when he gives his opinion on the club now. In a frank and honest interview in The Guardian, the Dutchman lays it all out and gives some pretty key advice for Ed Woodward.
It feels like a very long time since van Gaal was sacked by Woodward at Old Trafford, just days after he led the club to FA Cup success in the 2015/16 season, and it looks like that will be the last job the Dutchman has in management. That doesn’t mean by any stretch he’s out of touch with his former club, though, and as Rio Ferdinand has been linked with the Technical Director job at Old Trafford, LVG has had his say.
What did they say?
In this one, the comments are quite easy to relay. The famous manager had already been cutting in his words on Wayne Rooney and the way the club is run before being asked about Ferdinand’s links to the Technical Director role at Old Trafford. The links between Ferdinand and the senior role at Old Trafford surfaced back in April, and it seems that LVG really doesn’t like the idea.
In his time talking to The Guardian, Van Gaal said: “As a good player, you’re not a good manager or you’re not a good technical director. It’s more or less what is happening now with [Ole Gunnar] Solskjær, ex-players, old boys’ network. It’s not always a good choice. It can be but it’s not always a good choice.” Whilst he refrained from going straight for Ferdinand, his message cannot be misconstrued.
More years of pain
It could not be more simple. Whilst Ferdinand was one of the best central defenders of his generation and has also proven to be an impressive pundit in the BT Sport studios, he has no qualifications and no experience for the role of a Technical Director, especially not at a club as big as Manchester United. Should he take the job it would be the latest shambolic decision they make, and they’ve made a few.
Woodward has looked incompetent and out of his depth for large spells in his current role as the Red Devils’ chief executive and whilst his time at the club has brought nothing but pain and embarrassment, employing Ferdinand would almost certainly prolong those years of heartache for the Old Trafford faithful. Van Gaal has to be listened to, and that’s something the fans will agree with too.
A few months back, during Solskjaer’s impressive run at the start of his United managerial career, the fans would have laughed off their former manager’s claims. However, after a shocking end to the campaign, they’ve seen the light and will be desperate for their club to heed the warnings from van Gaal and avoid making any more misguided appointments.
