da heads bet: The first half of the season has been going rather well for Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal.
da bet vitoria: Just three points off the pace at the top of the English Premier League and into the Champions League’s last 16 as winners of Group A, when was the last time they had such a stellar start to a campaign?
Still, with their title rivals set to strengthen further in the coming window, Wenger can’t afford to rest on his laurels if he’s to win a first league title since the ‘Invincibles’ campaign in 2003/04.
The Arsenal manager has shown a bit more willingness to spend money in recent years than in the past and fans will be hoping he works with the club to open the chequebook again and sign some first-team talent.
So, what does his Christmas list look like and who should be on it?
Here are our FIVE players that we think must be on Wenger’s wishlist…
Marquinhos
Arsenal know all about Marquinhos having faced him in this year’s Champions League. The PSG defender has found more first-team football since David Luiz departed to return to Chelsea but could still be tempted by a move to the Premier League.
Wenger’s defence has been pretty solid this season but Laurent Koscielny is the wrong side of 30 and at just 22, Marquinhos could be a long-term replacement.
He has versatility in his locker, too, as he’s able to play on the right side of the defence also. If Arsenal are going to spend big, securing one of Europe’s best young defenders should be a priority.
Robert Lewandowski
With rumours swirling that Alexis Sanchez could be set to leave Arsenal at some point in January or the summer, Arsenal need their next big money, marquee star signing.
Every Arsenal fan would love that man to be Robert Lewandowski. He is a signing most football fans would want for their club: a classic striker that has pace, skill and the ability to finish with devastating effect.
His form is no less lethal for Bayern this season with 17 goals in 21 appearances. Should Sanchez leave he could be just the ticket.
Kylian Mbappe
Arsene Wenger loves a French signing and young Kylian Mbappe is another from his home nation that could impact positively on the Arsenal team.
Just 17, he is already playing first-team football for a decent Monaco side and has scored three and assisted four in eleven appearances for them this season and has the ability to lead the attack or play in fromleft-hand hand side.
Young players rarely emerge and hit the ground running in such a manner, and the guiding hand of Wenger could prove tempting for an exciting young talent.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
Like Lewandowski, Aubameyang would fit the bill as a blockbuster marquee signing for Arsene Wenger. The Gabon international has picked up where Lewandowski left off at Borussia Dortmund, scoring 99 goals in 161 appearances.
He’s tracking ahead of that ratio this season and has incredibly scored 19 goals in 18 appearances already. His next move will likely be to one of Europe’s giants and although seemingly a happy man in Germany, if Arsenal do indeed have money to spend and space in their squad with the departure of Sanchez, this man should be near the top of any list.
Isco
Reports have suggested Mesut Ozil could be joining Alexis Sanchez on his way out of the Emirates. If that’s the case, Wenger will be missing creativity in his midfield.
Signing Isco would go some way to replacing Ozil’s talents. He’s scored two and assisted two more for Real Madrid this season and has the ability to win games through the middle of the park.
Like others on the list he would present a significant outlay for Wenger but given he also has strong physical attributes, would likely fit in well to Premier League football.
