da realbet: With all the top teams losing unexpected points, reigning champions Chelsea toiling near the relegation zone and surprise act Leicester on top of the league, this season’s title race looks like the most open in some time.
da apostebet: Most observers would suggest that the Blues are too far off the pace to pose a genuine threat now, while top four hopefuls Liverpool and Tottenham do not have what it takes just yet to stay with the frontrunners.
With plucky Leicester expected to fall away and Manchester United playing some abject attacking football, Manchester City and Arsenal look to be left to potentially fight it out for top spot.
The Gunners have been in and around the Premier League’s elite for as long as most can remember, but without a title in 11 years the Emirates Stadium faithful would agree that becoming champions is well overdue.
Arsene Wenger has been building a squad methodically and with caution. It is one he can trust, meaning that the French coach has refused to buy for the sake of it, much to the disdain of the club’s supporters at times.
What this does mean though is that anyone the experienced tactician buys is someone he really wants. This should be a real source of pride for Mesut Ozil, who was brought to the north London outfit for a club-record transfer fee in 2013.
Since then the German has had hot and cold spells in the Arsenal team, having to deal with injuries and dips in form in England. However, of late the mercurial playmaker has showed exactly why the usually thrifty Wenger was willing to break the bank to sign him from Real Madrid.
Back fully fit and firing, Ozil has been a creative talisman for the title-chasing side and arguably the club’s best player of the season so far. The diminutive schemer has an unrivalled eye for a killer pass and guile unlike most in world football, and this is now being turned into end product at the right end of the pitch for the Gunners.
Ozil’s 13 Premier League assists so far this season are almost double as many as his closest rivals, with the Germany international laying on goals consistently for Olivier Giroud and the other members of the Arsenal attack.
Much of the hype surrounding Arsenal in the last 12 months has been based around Alexis Sanchez; an electrifying attacker that has the speed, skill and killer instinct to strike fear into opposition defences. There is certainly no doubting the Chilean’s calibre and the fact that he is a massively important part of the Gunners set-up. However, with other such as Alex-Oxlade Chamberain and Theo Walcott able to offer watered down versions of what Sanchez does if he is not available, Ozil has become the most critical player in the Arsenal ranks.
The World Cup winner’s skill-set is unique in the Gunners’ squad, with only Santi Cazorla being able to rival Ozil in terms of creativity and vision. However, with the Spaniard currently injured and playing in a new deeper role anyway, Ozil has become Arsenal’s main man.
The debate over whether the North London side need a new striker rages on, but while Ozil is in the Arsenal team and laying on chance after chance for his team-mates, the Gunners have their best opportunity to become English champions this term in some time.
