As quoted by Sky Sports, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has launched a staunch defence of centre-back John Stones regarding the England international’s history of mistakes.
What did he say?
The 25-year-old’s last high-profile error came when he was at fault for a goal in England’s Nations League semi-final defeat to the Netherlands back in June, and he has previously come under-fire for major mistakes.
However, speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of City’s game against Yokohama on Saturday, Guardiola delivered an impassioned defence of the former Everton star.

He said: “John is a young player who has made mistakes once or twice but not too many. This kind of situation, if the player is open-minded, you become stronger. It’s part of the game.
“People always hear just wins, no defeats and no mistakes. In football, there are more mistakes than success and you lose more than you win. If he makes it part of his process to push himself to make himself better, he will do it. But it depends on him.”
Learning from your mistakes
Everybody makes mistakes. That’s for granted. But it’s whether you’re able as an individual to take a step back, learn from it and move on. Too often, Stones’ errors have felt like a case of deja vu, repeating the same things over and over again and often ending in disastrous consequences.

The 25-year-old’s ability on the ball makes him the archetypal modern-day centre-half, and there is no doubt that under Guardiola, he is learning from one of the best managers of this generation. But having been in the Premier League for a number of years now, the penny has to drop in terms of how and when he decides to play out from the back.
Following the departure of Vincent Kompany earlier this summer, Stones now has one less rival to contend with in his position. If he can impress in pre-season, then this upcoming campaign could finally be the year in which Stones really lays down a marker.
